An Introduction

This week, we’re exploring one of the most unsettling and empowering ideas I’ve encountered in Robert Moss’s Sidewalk Oracle: that consciousness and matter aren’t separate, that we’re constantly broadcasting a signal the world responds to, and that what we carry in our bodies and energy fields magnetises reality around us in ways both obvious and invisible.

It’s an idea with ancient roots. The alchemists knew it, the shamans practised it, and every wisdom tradition has some version of it. But it’s also surprisingly contemporary: quantum physicists like Wolfgang Pauli and psychologists like Carl Jung spent decades circling the same mystery from opposite directions, eventually reaching for an old mediaeval term to describe what they were seeing: unus mundus. One world. Not mind and matter as separate things, but consciousness and physical reality as complementary aspects of a single, responsive whole.

The practical implication is radical: whatever attitude you’re carrying – hope or dread, openness or defensiveness, abundance or scarcity – arrives in the room before you do. It’s already shaping the situation you’re about to encounter, already magnetising certain responses and repelling others. You’re not just perceiving reality through different lenses depending on your mood. You’re participating in reality’s creation through the field you generate moment by moment.

“Whatever you think or feel,” Moss writes, “the universe says yes.”

This is not a sign of reward or punishment. It’s also not due to cosmic forces bestowing wishes upon you. Because in a reality where consciousness and matter are woven together, what you carry becomes what you attract. You are, as Emerson declared, “a magnet in an iron globe.” And the magnetism operates whether you’re aware of it or not.

This essay is an attempt to take that idea seriously, not as mystical speculation but as practical physics, not as positive thinking but as radical responsibility. If our attitudes are genuinely creative forces, if we’re constantly setting ourselves up for what the world is going to give us, then we need to become conscious of what we’re broadcasting. We need to develop what Moss calls “a personal science of shivers,” learning to read our own fields the way a sailor reads weather.

The structure of the week ahead:

Monday (Part 1: “The Attitude That Precedes You”) introduces the core claim and traces it back through history to the alchemists who knew that inner state was as crucial as outer procedure, Balzac’s insistence that ideas are projectiles fired from the brain, and the ancient understanding that “the passions of the soul work magic.”

Tuesday (Part 2: “One World”) explores the scientific framework that makes this more than magical thinking: Jung and Pauli’s collaboration, the breakdown of observer and observed in quantum mechanics, the concept of unus mundus where mind and matter are aspects of one reality.

Wednesday (Part 3: “Strange Attractors”) examines the mechanism: how we function as magnets, attracting and repelling according to what we embody, and how to develop sensitivity to what we’re actually carrying in our bodies rather than just our thoughts.

Thursday (Part 4: “Shadow and Power”) confronts what happens when we get this wrong—the dark side of unconscious magnetism—and then reveals the fundamental power we always have: the freedom to choose our attitude regardless of circumstances.

Friday (Part 5: “The Game”) provides practical tools for working with conscious magnetism, acknowledges the mystery and limits of our control, and issues the invitation to begin participating deliberately in the creative conversation between consciousness and world.

A few things to know before we begin:

This is not a promise that positive thinking will fix everything. Life includes genuine suffering, structural injustice, and random catastrophe. Not everything that happens to you is something you attracted. But even in the midst of circumstances you didn’t choose, you have power over what you carry in response. And that power, exercised consciously, changes what comes next.

This is also not a complete explanation of how consciousness and matter interact. We’re working with mystery here, with phenomena we can observe and work with even if we can’t fully explain them. As Moss says, “We are less interested in how and why these things work than that they do work and offer a rich harvest if we work, or rather, play with them.”

And finally: this requires you to become exquisitely honest about what you’re actually broadcasting versus what you think you’re broadcasting. The universe responds to the real signal, not the stated intention. Which means you have to learn to read your body, trust your gut, and pay attention to what keeps showing up in your life as evidence of what you’ve been asking for underneath your conscious wishes.

It’s uncomfortable work. It strips away the comfort of victimhood and the luxury of blame. It requires you to recognise that you have more power than you’ve been claiming—and more responsibility than you’ve been willing to accept.

But here’s what it offers in return: agency. Partnership with reality. The capacity to shift your experience not by controlling external circumstances but by consciously working with the one thing you can always control—the field you generate, the frequency you broadcast, the magnetism you embody.

The universe is always saying yes.

The question this week will help you answer: ‘Yes’ to what?

Let’s find out.

Tomorrow: Part 1 – “The Attitude That Precedes You”
We begin with a question: What if your attitude isn’t just your private internal weather but a force that’s already at work in the space before your body arrives?
