In the Narrative Alchemy community this week, we’ve been circling around the idea of fertile waiting. It’s a phrase that sounds like a contradiction at first, but many of us seem to be living inside it.

Fertile waiting is the kind of pause that isn’t empty or stuck. It’s more like the moment before a seed breaks open underground. Nothing visible is happening, yet everything is quietly shifting. The psyche is reorienting itself. A new pattern is gathering strength beneath the surface.

This is where the notion of being actively passive comes in. It’s not about giving up or drifting. It’s about tending the threshold without trying to force an exit. Instead of pushing for clarity or rushing toward the next chapter, we create the conditions where insight can emerge on its own terms.

In practice, this often looks gentle and understated: journaling to witness rather than fix, taking slow walks, following small curiosities, letting rest be part of the work. It’s a way of keeping the inner fire warm without turning the heat up too high. We cultivate the space where something new can come through.

So I’m opening this as a thread for conversation.

Where in your life are you being asked to practise fertile waiting?
How do you hold that tension between wanting movement and recognising that something deeper needs time?

Share whatever feels alive for you. This is a place for reflection rather than advice, but your experiences, metaphors, and stories are welcome.
